The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the U.S. Department of Education is responsible for enforcing laws prohibiting discrimination in federally assisted educational programs and activities. These laws include Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities.
UNT Dallas is committed to providing an educational environment that is free from discrimination on the basis of pregnant and parenting status in accordance with Texas Education Code, Section 51.982 and other applicable laws, including Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex (including pregnancy discrimination) in education programs or activities; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability (including disabilities based on temporary medical conditions from pregnancy); and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in public schools such as institutions of higher education.
UNT Dallas has policies that prohibit the discrimination of anyone based on pregnancy or parenting. Those policies are Policy 16.001 Diversity and Opportunity Statement, Policy 16.002 Prohibiting Discrimination and Harassment, and Policy 7.005 Student Attendance.
Request Pregnancy & Parenting modifications
The University will provide reasonable supportive measures, in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations, to pregnant and parenting students on an individualized and voluntary basis depending on the student’s needs resulting from pregnancy or related conditions and/or parenting.
Documentation may be required to receive supportive measures. Supportive measures that constitute an undue hardship, or fundamentally alter an education program or activity are not considered reasonable supportive measures.
Specific modifications will vary from student to student. Examples of modifications may include:
A pregnant student will be allowed to make up any work missed due to medically necessary absences for pregnancy. A student will be offered acceptable alternative arrangements to make up missed work. The student will not be required to complete make up work until the student’s medically-necessary absences for pregnancy are completed.
UNT Dallas provides two lactation rooms on campus for faculty, staff, and students to use. The Lactation Rooms offer a comfortable, private area for the milk expression or breastfeeding. All rooms are secure and equipped with locks, refrigerators, seating and electrical outlets.Those rooms can be found below:
