The Office of Experiential Learning began to provide stipend to undergraduate students who were participating in unpaid internships in 2021. Since this time, and now in collaboration with the Center for Socioeconomic Mobility through Education (CSME), we have provided funding for unpaid internships for over 50 UNT Dallas students and have distributed over $240,000 in funding. This stipend is intended to encourage students to participate in experiential learning opportunities that align with their career goals and help increase their post-graduation marketability.

FAQs:
- Can interns adjust their schedules based on workload?
Yes, interns are expected to average 15 hours per week. If an intern works fewer hours in one week, they can make up for it in the following week to balance out the total. - What if an intern is sick or has an emergency and cannot work?
Interns must notify both their on-site supervisor and the university. Depending on the amount of missed work, the absence may not affect their stipend payment. - Are interns allowed to miss a day for a test or project presentation?
Yes, interns can miss a day for such commitments, as long as they have received approval from their employer. - Who should the intern contact if the internship isn’t working out or if there’s an
issue that needs addressing?
Please contact Experiential Learning (Experiential.Learning@untdallas.edu) if there are any issues or concerns. - When are time sheets due for interns, and will there be a penalty if interns can’t
get them signed on time?
Time sheets are due at the end of each month. If a supervisor is unable to sign off on time, they should email Experiential Learning as soon as possible to confirm the hours completed. - Are interns allowed to participate in the program more than one semester? Students are eligible to receive the stipend for an internship at the same site for
a maximum of 1 year (3 semesters). However, note the stipend is not guaranteed and is dependent upon funding availability
and employer interest.
- An intern is unable to continue their internship, who should be contacted? Interns should let their on-site supervisor know as soon as possible, as well as Cinthya
Parreno. The stipend will end or be modified depending on the last day of the internship.
If an intern leaves without contacting us and receive compensation for work not completed,
the intern will be asked to pay the stipend back. If the intern is struggling with
lack of resources such as transportation or food insecurity, please contact the Wellness
Center before making this decision as they may be able to help.
- How do organizations partner with the program?
If your organization is interested in partnering please ensure the internship opportunities being offered include:
* Hands-on experience, apply academic knowledge in the workplace
* A supervisor who can also act as mentor, and is committed to see the intern succeed
* An opportunity to learn about the company leadership and company culture
* An environment where interns are challenged and supported
* Professional development of soft skills, as well as technical
* A safe work environment and the equipment required for the role
Once you have ensured the internship opportunities meet the above requirements, please feel free to send the internship position description to Experiential.Learning@untdallas.edu. A written position description is required before we can share any information with potential interns. - How do interns apply for positions?
Once an intern has applied to be a part of the program and is selected to participate they will reach out directly to the organizations listed on this page, or other organizations they have encountered through other means. Experiential Learning is not a staffing agency. We do not match interns to the organizations. It is the interns responsibility to reach out to organizations they are interested in. The organizations listed on this page are a few of many organizations students can work with. - When will the Internship Scholarship application open?
The application will open mid-late summer for the Fall 2025 semester. An announcement will be made when the time is closer.
If you have any questions about the stipend, please contact Experiential Learning at Experiential.Learning@untdallas.edu.
