What is College Work-Study (CWS)?
College Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.
Who Qualifies for CWS?
To qualify for a College Work-Study award, a student must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), meet the general eligibility requirements for federal student aid, demonstrate financial need, and be enrolled or accepted for enrollment, as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree-seeking student.
Amount of Awards
- Based on established financial need.
- An average award of $5,000 per nine-month academic period will be awarded to any student who is eligible, ($2500 for fall and $2500 for spring).
Payment
- Students are generally paid on the 1st and 15th of every month.
- Students are paid at least the federal minimum wage.
- Departments determine the wages per hour, job duties, and approval all timesheets for the employee.
Repayment
- Repayment is not required. The money you earn is yours to help pay your education expenses in any way you see fit.
- Must be reported as earnings on your income tax return the following year.
- When completing the FAFSA for the following year, report your Work-Study earnings under the Additional Financial Information section. (Work-Study earnings are treated as financial aid rather than income when the Expected Family Contribution is calculated.)
