Process for Approval to take the 268 Principal as Instructional Leader Exam
Documentation required (must be sent to the EDLE Program Coordinator for approval and processing)
- Must have completed EDLE 5300, 5330, 5650, 5620, 5500, 5370
- Request a practice test (Login is required using your UNT Dallas Student ID), must show mastery of 85% for approval
- Complete Graduate Licensure Exam Application (Login is required using your UNT Dallas Student ID) for test approval for TExES 268
Process for Approval for the Principal Intern Certificate
Documentation required (must be sent to the EDLE Program Coordinator for approval and processing)
- Complete EDLE 5500: Leadership in Practicum
- Submit an application for the Intern Certificate through ECOS (instructions for to apply for the Internship Certificate through ECOS are found at the bottom of this document)
- Complete fingerprinting process with Texas Education Agency
- Pay fee to Texas Education Agency
- Submit Approval of Recommendation for Educator Certification Application
Process for Approval to take the 368 Performance Assessment for School Leadership Exam (PASL)
Documentation required (must be sent to the EDLE Program Coordinator for approval and processing)
- Must have passed the 268 Principal as Instructional Leader Exam
- Must be enrolled in EDLE 5700: Leadership Portfolio
- Complete Graduate Licensure Exam Application(Login is required using your UNT Dallas Student ID)
Process for Approval for Principal Certification
Documentation required (must be sent to the EDLE Program Coordinator for approval and processing)
- Completed the full Master’s in Educational Leadership program
- Must have passed the 268 Principal as Instructional Leader Exam and the 368 Performance Assessment for School Leadership Exam
- Submit an application for the standard Principal Certification through ECOS (instructions to apply for the standard Principal Certification through ECOS are found at the bottom of this document)
- Submit fingerprints
- Pay the application fee to Texas Education Agency
- Submit Approval of Recommendation for Educator Certification Application
- Submit a current copy of your teacher service record stating two years of creditable service
- Verify with the EDLE Program Coordinator that all practicum hours have been completed and are fully documented
Instructions for ECOS Login through Texas Education Agency
Quick start:
- Go to https://tea.texas.gov/ and click on “TEAL Login” to create a new account or log in to an existing account.
- After logging in, click “Access Applications” on the self-service menu.
- Click on the "View My Educator Certification Account" link to access the Educator Certification Online System (ECOS).
- Verify your profile information and click on “Continue” to move to the next screen.
- From the Educator Main Menu, click on “Applications.”
- Select “Intern Certificate” and complete the application.
Note: Be sure to choose “University of North Texas at Dallas” as your education preparation provider.
Texas Education Code for Principal as Instructional Leader Certificate
- 241.60. Requirements for the Issuance of the Standard Principal Certificate.
To be eligible to receive the standard Principal as Instructional Leader Certificate, a candidate must:
(1) successfully complete either the appropriate examinations required under Chapter 230, Subchapter C, of this title (relating to Assessment of Educators), or a piloted examination developed for the Principal as Instructional Leader Certificate;
(2) hold, at a minimum, a master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education that at the time was accredited or otherwise approved by an accrediting organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board;
(3) hold a valid classroom teaching certificate;
(4) have two creditable years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service) and the Texas Education Code, §5.001(2); and
(5) successfully complete a principal preparation program that meets the requirements of §241.10 of this title (relating to Preparation Program Requirements for the Principal as Instructional Leader Certificate), §241.15 of this title (relating to Standards Required for the Principal as Instructional Leader Certificate), Chapter 227 of this title (relating to Provisions for Educator Preparation Candidates), and Chapter 228 of this title (relating to Requirements for Educator Preparation Programs).
