The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, supply fees, student service fee, late registration fees, or any miscellaneous fees.
To apply for the Hazlewood Exemption, applicants must:
1. At the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces, (DD-214 required, must be Member 4 or Service 2 copy) & (40 TAC §461.40)
2. Have received an honorable discharge or separation or a general discharge under honorable conditions as indicated on the Veteran's Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty;
3. Served at least 181 days of active duty service (excluding training);
4. Currently reside in Texas; (40 TAC §461.40) & (40 TAC §461.70)
5. Have no federal Veteran’s education benefits, or have no federal Veterans education benefits dedicated to the payment of tuition and fees only (such as Chapter 33 or 31); for term or semester enrolled that do not exceed the value of Hazlewood benefits;
6. Not be in default on a student loan made or guaranteed by the State of Texas;
7. Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost), unless the college’s governing board has ruled to let Veterans receive the benefit while taking non-funded courses; and
8. Meet the GPA requirement of the institution’s satisfactory academic progress policy in a degree or certificate program as determined by the institution’s financial aid policy and, as an undergraduate student, not be considered to have attempted an excessive amount of credit hours.

6. Have no federal Veteran’s education benefits, or have no federal Veterans education benefits dedicated to the payment of tuition and fees only (such as Chapter 33 or 31); for term or semester enrolled that do not exceed the value of Hazlewood benefits;
7. Not be in default on a student loan made or guaranteed by the State of Texas;
8. Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost), unless the college’s governing board has ruled to let Veterans receive the benefit while taking non-funded courses; and
9. Meet the GPA requirement of the institution’s satisfactory academic progress policy in a degree or certificate program as determined by the institution’s financial aid policy and, as an undergraduate student, not be considered to have attempted an excessive amount of credit hours.
1. Be a spouse/child of a Veteran who, at the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces, (DD-214 required, must be Member 4 or Service 2 copy) & (40 TAC §461.40)
2. Be a spouse/child of a Veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Texas National Guard who died as a result of service related injuries or;
3. Have received an honorable discharge or separation or a general discharge under honorable conditions as indicated on the Veteran's Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty;
4. Served at least 181 days of active duty service (excluding training);
5. Have no federal Veteran’s education benefits, or have no federal Veterans education benefits dedicated to the payment of tuition and fees only (such as Chapter 33 or 31); for term or semester enrolled that do not exceed the value of Hazlewood benefits;
6. Not be in default on a student loan made or guaranteed by the State of Texas;
7. Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident;
8. Not be in default on a student loan made or guaranteed by the State of Texas;
9. Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost), unless the college’s governing board has ruled to let Veterans receive the benefit while taking non-funded courses; and
10. Meet the GPA requirement of the institution’s satisfactory academic progress policy in a degree or certificate program as determined by the institution’s financial aid policy and, as an undergraduate student, not be considered to have attempted an excessive amount of credit hours.

* Eligible students have until 5:00 pm of the last class day, as published in the academic calendar, for the semester to which the exemption applies. Allow at 3-4 weeks, from the date your application is submitted for Student Business Services to process your exemption.
For first time applicants, and those who have not used Hazlewood at UNTD within the past academic year:
Note: All documents must be submitted by the student through the online certification system. Documents submitted via email will not be accepted. Not submitting all required documents will delay processing.
Students must apply for Hazlewood each semester with the Hazlewood Agreement through mydallas.unt.edu. Students must continue to meet eligibility requirements to continue to receive the Hazlewood Benefit. The benefit is not applied to a future semester enrollment until current end of term processes are completed and eligibility requirements are determined.
