The School of Business added to its list of accolades with a banner week that included accounting professor Dr. Cathy Scott winning a national award for innovation, and the UNT Dallas SHRM Student Chapter earning the highest honor awarded by the Society for Human Resource Management.
Dr. Scott won the Ernst & Young Foundation-sponsored 2019 Innovation in Accounting Education Award for her website "Teaching and Learning Toolbox" (TeachingAndLearningToolbox.com), which she developed in collaboration with Mark Ahrens, professor of accounting at St. Louis Community College. They developed the website for sharing technological resources, and providing tips to successfully incorporate technology into courses. The website is utilized by educators in 49 states and more than 30 countries.
"Being recognized for this award is extremely meaningful to me, not only for the impact this work can have for our students at UNTD, but also the opportunity to influence accounting education as a whole," Dr. Scott said. "I truly appreciate the support of Dean Shumway and UNTD as a community. It has allowed me to continue pursuing my passion for improving student engagement and success as well as influencing the future of Accounting Education."
Dr. Scott was a professor at Navarro College when she developed the website with Professor Ahrens. She initially came to UNT Dallas as an adjunct instructor in the Dealership Management and Accounting Programs, and joined the UNT Dallas faculty last fall as Associate Professor of Business Accounting. This is the second national award she has won for the creation of the website. She also took home the 2018 Bea Sanders/AICPA Teaching Innovation Award for innovative teaching practices.
The UNT Dallas SHRM Student Chapter made it five consecutive years of being recognized by the Society for Human Resource Management. The chapter hit a grand slam this year by earning the organization's highest honor, the Outstanding Chapter Award. The prestigious award goes to the chapter that provides superior growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members.
“In keeping with UNT Dallas’ commitment to career readiness, our award winning SHRM chapter provides world-class professional and career development opportunities," School of Business dean Dr. Karen Shumway said. "Please join me in congratulating Dr. Elizabeth Muniz, Dr. Charlene Conner, Dr. John Hubbard and all of our SHRM students."
