In the demanding and often high-stress world of law enforcement, mental health and well-being are critical components of officer success and resilience. At the forefront of this mission in Texas is Dustin Schellenger, a dedicated leader who serves as the State Director for the Texas Law Enforcement Peer Network (TLEPN) and oversees the implementation of Texas’ Cordico solution—a comprehensive wellness platform for officers. The TLEPN program originated at UNT Dallas and is funded by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) .
Because of his commitment to officer wellness, Police1.com has recognized Schellenger by naming him to its inaugural “Got Your Six” list—a prestigious acknowledgment honoring individuals who have made a significant impact in supporting law enforcement. Police1 is a nationally respected organization that publishes content online, on social media and in newsletters.
The phrase “Got Your Six,” rooted in military terminology meaning “I’ve got your back,” perfectly embodies the mission of this recognition: to highlight those who stand in support of law enforcement professionals and their service to the community.
Under Schellenger’s leadership, TLEPN has emerged as a vital statewide resource providing law enforcement officers with access to specially trained peers who help address the challenges of stress, trauma, fatigue and burnout. With more than 1,700 trained peers available through phone, email, or in-person support, the program is actively working to combat police suicide and self-harm.
Reflecting on the impact of TLEPN, Schellenger said, “If we save even one, then all the work we’re doing to get this launched across the state will be worth it.” His dedication to providing critical mental health support has made a tangible difference in the lives of countless officers, ensuring they have the tools and peer support necessary to navigate the challenges of their profession.
Through his vision and leadership, Dustin Schellenger is not only transforming officer wellness in Texas but also setting an example for law enforcement support programs nationwide—proving that behind every badge, there should always be someone who’s got their back.
