Completion of Lockstep Courses

Students may not elect to delay taking lockstep courses or to take lockstep courses out of sequence. A student who receives a failing grade in a lockstep course must retake the lockstep course either (1) the next time the course is offered, or (2) the next time the course is offered within the student’s entering division. A student who does not complete a lockstep course with his or her entering division due to an extended absence must, upon returning, take the lockstep course either (1) the next time the course is offered, or (2) the next time the course is offered within the student’s entering division. The following definitions and limitations apply to any student taking a lockstep course under this policy:

  • The student’s entering division is the division in which the student was enrolled during the student’s first semester of law school.
  • During the first two (for full-time) or three (for part-time) semesters, a student may not exceed the total number of lockstep credit hours that the student would otherwise take, had the student not failed the lockstep course.
  • A student may not postpone a lockstep course that the student is qualified to take (i.e., a lockstep course for which the student has completed all prerequisites) in order to substitute a previously failed lockstep course.
  • Students must adhere to all prerequisites.
  • Except in extenuating circumstances, a student must take part II of a two-part lockstep course in the semester immediately following the semester in which they complete part I.

Students who transfer divisions prior to completing all lockstep courses must follow the relevant policy on completing lockstep courses.

Both the original failing grade and the new grade will count toward the student’s cumulative GPA.
